Sunset Rotary Launches Make a Kid Smile Project

Through a new Rotary project called Make a Kid Smile, businesses, organizations and individuals can fulfill the specific athletic, artistic or educational needs of local children. Here’s how it works: Children submit their requests, which are vetted properly then published regularly in Coastal View News. Readers who choose to grant wishes will have their names printed in CVN alongside their granted wish.

The idea for Make a Kid Smile came to local lawyer Stefanie Herrington after she learned that a Carpinteria teen had missed out on a school trip to New York City due to lack of funds. Herrington, who is past president of Rotary Club of Carpinteria Sunset and Girls Inc. of Carpinteria, realized that the teen was just one example of many kids whose needs could be met if there were greater awareness. “This new program allows members of our community to connect children to opportunities that would otherwise pass them by,” Herrington said. “The needs have always existed. The generosity has always existed. What didn’t exist was the bridge between the two. Rotary can play matchmaker and connect children to individuals willing to support their passions.”
